Parents / Guardians:
Antony Anderson - The descendant of a long line of Irish-Americans from New York. His family is reasonably wealthy and reasonably large. In his younger years, he was a successful engineer, but he's now retired. While he was often busy, he was still around to support his children. Prone to eye-rollingly bad puns.
Beatrice Lieberg Anderson - Beatrice was the only daughter of Norwegian immigrants, born in New York. Her parents passed away when she was very young, and she was taken in by a loving pair of adoptive parents. She met Antony when he spilled coffee on her dress at a cafe one day. Bea has faced many trials in her life; she's remained tough without losing tenderness and has passed on this strength to her children. Though she worked as a secretary for many years, she's now retired.
Siblings:
Lorraine Anderson - Formerly Lorraine Yeung; she took her maiden name back when she divorced her husband David. Lori is calm, pleasant, and motherly--it's difficult for her to get angry at anyone. She's six years older than Robert, but they've always gotten along well. Her daughter by David, Jane, is eight; Robert and Lori both love her dearly.
Beliefs / Religion:
Robert is a Christmas-and-Easter Catholic. While both his parents were religious and he does believe in God and the afterlife, he's mostly just apathetic to it all and doesn't think much about spiritual matters.
Career / Past careers:crazy frat party attendee student, paper boy, university newspaper staff, waiter, various non-profit organizations, freelance writer; currently, he's an office worker for the National Superhero Registry.
Personality:
Robert is, well, a very average, very ordinary guy. He minds his own business and does what he can to get by, helping others and giving them advice when he's able.
...On the outside, that is.
Behind this plain and boring facade is a person of incredible drive and determination. His ambition comes very close to being what defines him. He's a perfectionist, a go-getter, competitive to death, a real Type A sort of personality, and in everything, he wants to be the best... but what the end result of this is doesn't matter much to Robert anymore. He just wants to be number one. Robert's sense of entitlement runs deep, and if he isn't winning, he's very quick to fall into cynicism and moodiness (until he can claw his way back up to being better than everybody else, that is). He's more cunning than people give him credit for, and he has a certain knack for knowing which buttons to press and which strings to pull to get what he wants. As such, he's a master of words and appearances, written and spoken. When he wants something, he's sure to go after it no matter what the cost. Sure, this makes him seem like he's manipulative, but really, he's just-- ...uh... no, yeah, he actually is pretty manipulative.
However, all of this is built upon a base of insecurity. Robert tries so hard to be the best of everyone because he's deeply internalized a fear of loss and failure. What isn't good enough isn't worth taking seriously--including himself. Not to mention that getting teased as a kid for his geeky interests has led him to quite fiercely compartmentalize his life: no one who knows him professionally can EVER know he likes to play PC games on the weekends, and none of his internet friends can ever know what a stuffy uninteresting guy he is in the real world. Not being able to fully express himself because of his self-consciousness is a major factor in why he's so high-strung.
While he's not an actively terrible person, the self-centered, vain parts of his personality often get in the way of him being a nice person.. He's pursued good causes before and done good things, but most of his drive comes from improving his own life and the lives of people he cares about. His world's very much driven inwards. As a result, he can be quite apathetic toward a cause and suddenly switch gears to care a LOT about it once it somehow involves him or someone he cares about. (He tried his hand at being ~politically active~ for a few semesters in college. That didn't pan out when the glamour of being part of something bigger wore off, as he mostly cared about what being a good person could do for him.) He's loyal enough to his friends and family, sure; he honestly could become a decent person if he tried a bit more to expand his worldview and to pull himself outwards some. Unfortunately, there's still a significant amount of bitter douchebag shoulder chip left to resolve before he can get there. In the meantime, he works mostly for himself.
As for relating to others, he's not a total sociopath or anything--after all, if you don't know how people work, how can you maneuver among them?--but he's very far from being someone with pure intentions. He tries very hard to cultivate a charming, polite outward appearance. Part of being the best is wanting everyone to like him. Whether or not it always works is an issue: he often comes across as either fake or a try-hard. And while he's gotten very good at working with what people expect him to do, people who figure his gambit out are very, very quick to irritate him. With these people and with others who offend him, Robert has a tendency to hold grudges. He's a man of strong opinions. If you get on his bad side, he'll still try to be polite to you...but it doesn't mean he has to like you. More capable of coldness than he looks.
